Abstract

Concentrations of dissolved manganese in water pumped from two University of Rhode Island supply wells located about 50 feet from Thirty Acre Pond in the Chipuxet River valley in southern Rhode Island began to increase markedly between 1965 and 19&7, after having yielded water containing little or no manganese for about 1'f years. The wells are about 10 feet apart and are screened at different depths in stratified glacial drift, one from 50 to 70 feet, the other from 111 to 131 feet below land surface.
