Pollen analysis systems are continually evolving, so only a partial review is possible. The study highlights the potential of advanced computer‑numerical methods in pollen analysis and presents POLPAL as a case study. POLPAL processes pollen data through computer‑assisted counting, table storage, diagram plotting, numerical analysis, dating spectra, and mapping isopollen lines in Poland. POLPAL’s data‑processing approach outlines key steps and benefits, encouraging data exchange and idea sharing.
The main steps and ideas of pollen data processing are outlined, as resulted from the experience of POLPAL system exploitation on the regional scale. This system entails the following sequence: computer as- sisted pollen counting, through storing pollen tables, diagram plotting, numerical analysis, dating spectra and plotting isopollen lines on the map of Poland. We would like to emphasize the real possibilities of wide applica- tion of more or less advanced computer/numerical methods. The benefit of this approach of data acclamation and manipulation is that it encourages the interpersonal exchangeability of data and ideas. The system POLPAL is described as a case study of implementation of computer in pollen analysis. This system will only be reviewed in part, because such systems are never in their final state and are also subject to future trends.
