Drill-in fluids are a special fluid type that has seen increasing field application, while constantly being refined and improved. Many different systems, including sized salt, specially sized carbonate, conventional carbonate, mixed-metal hydroxide and oil-based or synthetic, have been used successfully in optimizing reservoir performance. Each fluid has been successfully used. The key to applying any of these drill-in fluids is matching the fluid with the reservoir and the completion design. For this reason the pertinent characteristics of the reservoir and the completion need to be determined. This paper reviews these considerations.
