This report describes patterns of travel on foot, using data from the 1975/76 National Travel Survey and other sources, making special distinction between walking as a main mode of transport and as a means of access to other modes. The ability of people to walk, the extent of walking, trip rates and mileages, the effects of distance on walking, and trends in walking are discussed. Reported difficulties in walking are reviewed in relation to different pedestrian environments. (A) (TRRL)
