This article addresses the question of how soluble salts, particularly chlorides and sulfates, affect the performance and economics of commonly used corrosion-protective coatings systems? The article describes the evidence of the effects and impact of soluble salts, and considers if they are in fact a significant factor for the protection of steel. It also considers the techniques for detecting and identifying these contaminants. Techniques for removing them and negating their effects are also discussed. The levels of soluble salts permissible on steel to be coated are noted. The article also identifies areas requiring additional research, development, and evaluation.
