Abstract

This paper is part of a World Bank series on urban transportation strategy review. The paper addresses road safety in urban areas. The goal of the paper is to provide a status report about the problem, and the countermeasures and policies that have been implemented throughout the world. The paper describes successful practices that can be utilized in urban areas to decrease the number and severity of traffic accidents that occur in developing countries. These practices include highway traffic control and calming activities, institutional frameworks, highway safety education, government policy towards traffic accidents in urban areas, and traffic law enforcement.
