Abstract

Microscopic Traffic Simulation has proven to be a key tool to assist in the design and evaluation of ITS applications. AIMSUN2 is an advanced interactive microscopic simulator which has been under development over the last years, and has been, and is currently being used, in projects of the past ATS European Programmes and current 4th Framework Programme. Projects CLAIRE, SOCRATES, SOCRATES KERNEL, SOCRATES 3, ARTIS, KITS, ENTERPRICE or RHAPIT2 are just examples of that. In applications for real-time traffic management and information systems, traffic simulation could become the proper tool for short term predictions at the network level, and assessment of the proposer policies, if computing times can be shortened properly. For large scale models parallelization appears to be a natural way to achieve the required speed-up objectives. This paper describes the parallelization approach used, and presents the first computational results of the parallelization of the Traffic Simulator AIMSUN2, on a model of Barcelona's Ring Roads, for a real-time traffic management application.
