The typical members of steel industrial frame buildings are beam-columns, and these may be susceptible to lateral buckling. Many such members such as purlins and grits have sheeting attached at closely spaced intervals which may restrain them and improve their resistance to lateral buckling. The restraining action on the sheeting may be of four different types, and may oppose minor axis deflection, minor axis rotation, axial rotation and warping of the member. The effects of the minor axis deflection and minor axis rotation restraints also depend on the height at which the sheeting is connected to the member cross-section. In this paper, the finite element analysis presented by Barsoum and Gallagher is extended to allow for any combination of continuous restraints which are uniform along the element. At the same time a minor general program is made to permit the analysis of monosymmetric beam-columns with moment gradient. A computer program based on this extended finite element analysis is described, and some indication of its power and accuracy is provided. /Author/TRRL/
