Abstract

The articles assembled in this book deal with the problems and prospects of transportation in North American cities. They identify factors and forces that have shaped urban-transport decisions over the last decades - the changing preferences of the public and the changing role of government. Their authors discuss issues and problems, as well as challenges and priorities for urban transportation. Urban-transportation planning, development, operation and maintenance are expressed from various, often different viewpoints, enabling the reader to formulate perceptions of transportation's possibilities in tomorrow's metropolis. From a total of 59 articles, a separate abstract was prepared for each of the 9 articles that deal with energy aspects.
