Abstract

This paper describes designing for cost as a state of mind supported by tools. The tools discussed include rules derived from parametric cost analysis and the robust design process of Taguchi. The PRICE* manufacturing complexity generator and a unit cost equation for a liquid rocket engine are described as guides for designing for cost. A rather thorough review of the robust design approach is provided and is shown to be a method for obtaining a near-optimum set of design parameters for cost. The conclusion suggests that the robust design method offers improvements in engineering productivity and system cost.
