The Staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has developed mathematical models for assessing the washout rate of airborne contaminants under postulated loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) conditions. Heretofore there was no one document that summarized the technological bases of the models. In this report the models currently used by the staff are described in detail. The theoretical and experimental bases which underlie the models are reviewed, and model predictions are compared with experiments to demonstrate the conservatism inherent in the models.
