Bridge management systems (BMSs) encompass the systematic collection, analysis, and organization of bridge data to improve decision making capabilities related to the preservation of bridges. The basic characteristics of BMSs are a comprehensive database, the capability to assess the condition of bridges, the capability to rank and prioritize bridges, and the capability to develop alternative repair and rehabilitation strategies. This article: discusses U.S. transportation laws, research, and policy initiatives relating to the origin and inception of BMSs; looks at local BMSs; and also examines the future of BMSs. It is recommended that future research and development efforts continue to: explore new and improved techniques to access and analyze existing bridge databases; develop improved deterioration and cost models; incorporate natural hazards and extreme events into BMSs; and develop integrated asset management systems.
