A train running at high speed in an open area causes a pressure distribution around itself. This pressure distribution travels with the train as it moves, bringing about environmental problems along the wayside. Furthermore, the pressure variation increases in magnitude as the train speeds up. It is therefore necessary to predict the characteristics of pressure variation in order to successfully carry out a speedup project of railways. Using the boundary element method, the authors of this paper endeavored to carry out research on the pressure variation brought forth by train passing along the railway. Numerical results are compared with measured results of the field test, and a qualitative agreement is found between them. Countermeasures are being sought to reduce the pressure variation during train passage.
