Asphalt is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons with a molecular mass range varying widely form less than 150 to several thousand. Any attempt at analyzing this mixture of different molecular structures without prior separation would result in an average structure which would represent none of the present constituents present. It was hoped that, by separating asphalt into fractions by means of high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), it would be possible to obtain fractions of related chemical structures and relatively narrow molecular mass distributions. There are a number of analytical techniques for separating asphalt into related groups of components, and the separation scheme used in this paper is a modified version of a preparative-scale HPLC technique.
