Parenteral hyperalimentation is the intravenous administration of sufficient nutrients above the usual basal requirements to achieve tissue synthesis, positive nitrogen balance and anabolism. The history and background of this technique are briefly reviewed. The role of the hospital pharmacist in the formulation of parenteral hyperalimentation solutions is discussed. The clinical uses of parenteral hyperalimentation and some case studies are presented. The formulas, preparation procedures, and equipment used in bulk compounding parenteral hyperalimentation solutions are discussed and listed in tables. Several research products and the future of parenteral hyperalimentation therapy are discussed.
