Abstract

The author describes the development of a methodology based on permeation test methods for estimating concrete durability in structures and to assess and categorise potential concrete durability for performance-based specifications, compliance and quality control. Tests were carried out using ordinary, rapid-hardening and sulphate- resisting cement. Replacement materials were also used with pulverised fuel ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag and condensed silica fume replacing up to 45%, 70% and 10% respectively. A number of permeation tests were evaluated. Data from the ISAT-10 test were then correlated with various aspects of durability including carbonation, choloride ingress, chloride diffusion, freeze/thaw restistance and abrasion. The use of multivariate analysis is discussed. The development of an in situ test method using a hard vacuum is then outlined.
