Abstract

This chapter serves to introduce the reader to the background of plastics development, the variety of plastics available, their uses in Europe and worldwide, and important contemporary issues associated with their use. The history of plastics from pre-1900 until 2000 is described briefly. Sources of raw materials used for plastics production, and changes in these are then discussed. Types of plastics in current use and their applications are introduced, including figures for the world production of plastics. Current issues concerning health and safety and the environment and sustainability of plastics are considered.
