A method for estimating a directional wave spectrum is developed, based on measuring the time history of the motions and acceleration of a running ship. The spectrum is calculated by adopting the Maximum Likelihood Method, using an onboard microcomputer. A solution to the difficulty of transforming encounter frequency to absolute frequency is found.
