There have been analysed anomalous changes in VLF amplitudes and phases observed on propagation paths crossing either nuclear power station areas with an increased level of radiation or seismoactive regions during a time preceding the earthquake. A comparison of the data related to these different situations gives a ground to suggest a physical cause which is common to both of the cases, namely the increased conductivity of the lower atmosphere. We then put forward a lithosphere -ionosphere interaction model involving the variations in atmospheric vertical conduction electric currents leading to the change in electric potential nf the lower ionosphere. The Ionosphere parameter varfations have been estin1atcd, and compared with the gathered data, and we obtained quantitative and qualitative agreement.
