This volume deals with the Shilluk people of Sudan, and particularly with the Shilluk language. The material for this work was collected during the author's stay in Sudan in 1910. The introduction (p. XX-LXIII) includes the following sections: 1. Description of the country and its people; 2. Occupations; 3. Family life; 4. Religion; 5. Political institutions; 6. Ethnical components of the Shilluk people; 7. Migrations and history; 8. Christian missions in the Egyptian Sudan (by C.R. Watson). The first part deals with Shilluk grammar. The subject of the second part is folklore. It contains texts of Shilluk tales and stories with an English translation. There are grouped in the following sections: 1. Occupations; 2. Social institutions and scenes from daily life; 3. Sickness; 4. Political institutions; 5. Historical traditions; 6. War stories; 7. Traditions on Nyikang; 8. Prayers and religious ceremonies; 9. Stories about sorcerers; 10. Creation; 11. Animal stories; 12. Adventures between men and animals; 13. Anecdotes; 14. A hunting match, and a journey; 15. Songs; 16. Riddles. The third part consists of a dictionary: Shilluk-English and English-Shilluk.
