Abstract

The paper aims first to identify the features of deformation behaviour which have the greatest influence on ground movements in practice. Following from this, a review is given of how some geomaterials behave under the complex conditions imposed in the field. Soil deformation properties are shown to be dependent on many factors within their non-linear ranges, the most important being stress state, stress history, perturbing stress path, drainage conditions and strain level. Soil fabric, aging and bonding, porosity and strain rate also have significant influences. Behaviour within the linear elastic range is less sensitive to some of the above factors. A multi-surface elastic-plastic framework is found to be useful in describing these features of soil behaviour. For the covering abstract, see IRRD 892179.
