This paper reviews the utilization of new information technologies in the trucking industry, and analyzes the impact of such technologies on motor carriers. New opportunities are identified for improving the use of these technologies in the planning process through better integration. Three main categories of technologies are reviewed: electronic commerce, vehicle tracking and dispatch, and intelligent transportation systems involving the integration of information, electronics, and vehicle and infrastructure technologies, together with advanced planning and operating procedures.
