Abstract

The subgrade and pavement test items at the National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF) were constructed to exacting standards of uniformity. To document this uniformity of the subgrade and pavement construction, nondestructive tests were conducted using falling weight deflectometers and heavy falling weight deflectometers. This paper describes the evaluation of the nondestructive tests and other tests with respect to: description of the Federal Aviation Administration's new backcalculation software; linearity in pavement response and backcalculated subgrade modulus with applied HWD force; comparison of the stiffness of conventional and stabilized base pavements on the same subgrade and like pavements on different subgrades; and the effect of the stiffness of underlying layers on backcalculated subgrade modulus.
