The stresses in a shallow landslip are relatively small and failure is caused by increasing pore pressures. The paper describes field observations of failures in an embankment of compacted London clay and special laboratory stress path tests in which samples were brought to failure under conditions approximating to those in the field. The laboratory measured failure states compared well with the states back analysed from the field observations. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (Author/TRRL)
