Post-tensioning techniques are expanding the possibilities for masonry in building and bridge construction. Two projects in Britain and the U.S. show the rewards of rethinking approaches to a classic construction material. Masonry has been around almost as long as engineers have been putting up structures, but that doesn't mean that the material has run out of surprises. By applying techniques borrowed from concrete construction, creative engineers are finding new ways to exploit the possibilities of one of the world's oldest building materials.
