Abstract

A new family of engineering ceramics has been pioneered in recent years by CSIRO. These materials are variants of partially stabilized zirconia. They have extremely high strength and more importantly are toughened by a unique ceramic process. It is shown in this paper that these ceramics have extremely good wear resistance. Three examples are taken from industrial applications where wear resistance is of prime importance. In each case it is shown that the new zirconia ceramics can out perform conventional wear resistant alloys (a).
