Abstract A method is described for introducing a shunt into the carotid artery of small animals. A subcutaneous reservoir remains easily accessible between the scapulas allowing frequent collections of relatively large volumes of unhemolyzed blood. Such sampling is convenient and can be accomplished with minimal discomfort to the animal, which is gently restrained but not anesthetized.
