Abstract

The characteristics of nuclear air blast loading on ships' superstructures are discussed and theoretical methods of response analysis are outlined. A numerical study is described in which the performance of all-GRP deckhouse construction is contrasted with that of hybrid construction employing GRP cladding attached to steel framing: the greater elastic rigidity and ductility of the steel framing are found to convey advantages under moderate and severe blast loads. Tests are described of a full-scale hybrid GRP/steel panel representing a superstructure deck and of a corresponding 3-dimensional deckhouse module. Results provide validation of theoretical response predictions and demonstrate the capability of this form of construction under blast loading.
