This paper examines the effects of finely dispersed fillers on healing in asphalt binders and asphalt concrete mixes at relatively low temperatures. Two binder systems containing ground limestone fillers of significantly different gradations were used to study the effect of filler particle size on healing in the asphalt mastic. Healing was evaluated by measuring the recovery of stiffness in each specimen over a two hour rest period at 10 degrees C following fatigue damage in a dynamic rheometer. The results indicate that the mastic specimens containing the coarse filler healed at a substantially faster rate; averaging a recovery in stiffness of 81% during the rest period. The average recovery in stiffness of the mastic specimens containing the fine filler was only 54%. For the covering abstract see ITRD E107185.
