Abstract

The use of fiber reinforced plastics in bridge construction is discussed, particularly glass fiber reinforced plastics, aramid fiber reinforced plastics, and carbon fiber reinforced plastics. Most of the GFRP and AFRP strucutres were built in Europe, China and the United States while CFRPs have been studied extensively in Japan and Germany. This article describes pedestrian and road bridges using these materials, the bridge types ranging from simply supported slabs to sophisticated systems such as cable-stayed bridges. The FRPs, in addition to their corrosion resistance, have a high tensile strength that can provide high prestressing forces. They also have excellent electromagnetic resistance.
