Abstract SUMMARY The beneficial effect of grit blasting on the resistance of line-pipe steel to stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) has been demonstrated by experiments in which the threshold stress for SCC was determined for various grit-blasting conditions. Although the introduction of compressive stresses, surface deformation and mill-scale removal all may contribute to the increase in resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, it was found that removal of mill scale on the surface had the most significant effect.
