What`s wrong with unit closed loop optimization?

Abstract

The author reviewed several simulation products sold as unit online optimization models. While simulation models have steadily improved, their online, closed loop application still has a number of problems to overcome. The review has uncovered deficiencies in four categories: Lack of procedures for estimating unit products economics; Inability to define the unit feed; Steady state optimization in a dynamic environment; and Insufficient level of detail in the models. Ways are proposed to solve the difficulties. In some instances, the solutions already exist and all one needs to do is incorporate known technology into the product. In other instances, the solutions must be developed.
