Crytococcus neoformans is a saprophytic organism found in soil , dust , and manure.It has an affinity for the meninges in man and may also cause generalized infection.11In dogs , chorioretinitis , retinal detachment , encephalitis , spinal cord involvement , and generalized infection have been reported.8-10Blindness in a cat , with detachment of the retina and retrobulbar optic nerve impingement , occurred due to a cryptococcal granuloma.3.4The disease in cats usually follows a pattern of chronic respiratory disease with proliferative lesions 14.Watt , D.
