Bangladesh is facing the challenge of gradually surpassing its growing energy demand while managing significant environmental challenges. The coupling of smart grid technology and renewable distributed generation (RDG), especially from solar photovoltaics (PV) and battery storage, is a promising route to a sustainable energy future. This paper explores the significance of the expanding capacity of RDG integrated into the smart grid of Bangladesh by investigating the necessary policy frameworks, technological developments, and socio-political considerations. Scenario analysis shows that RDG can be integrated into the grid to improve reliability while removing greenhouse gases and supporting a green economic recovery. This research highlights that deployment following demand, harmonizing energy policies, and equitable access to energy resources are crucial for sustainable socio-economic and environmental development. The case of Bangladesh demonstrates the importance of balanced energy policies, shared access to renewable resources, and targeted technological investments to achieve sustainable and resilient power systems. This study contributes important insights for policymakers, energy planners, and stakeholders, especially in developing countries, to achieve a sustainable transition to renewable energy by integrating RDG with smart grids and practical implications for integrated, resilient power systems. • This study investigates the integration of smart grid technologies with renewable distributed generation to promote sustainable energy development in Bangladesh. • A mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative data analysis and qualitative assessments, was used to evaluate energy demand, GDP growth, and electrical energy consumption from 2014 to 2023. • The research identifies significant benefits of smart grid integration, including enhanced energy efficiency, improved grid stability, and increased sustainability. • Specific policy initiatives and strategic recommendations are proposed to overcome existing barriers and optimize the deployment of smart grid-integrated renewable energy systems in Bangladesh.
