Abstract The author investigates the mechanism of the evaporation of a liquid into a gas as applied to such processes as are found in gas scrubbers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, water coolers, air driers, etc. He establishes the formula for calculating the humidity of air from wet- and dry-bulb thermometer readings, and shows that the coefficient of heat transfer divided by the coefficient of diffusion equals the humid heat of the gas.
