Abstract

Plasma histamine levels were determined before and five minutes after intravenous injection of meglumine iothalamate 60% (Conray) in 57 randomly selected patients who underwent intravenous urography. Eighteen of the patients (32%) experienced a reaction to the injection beyond a sensation of warmth and taste. Thirteen patients (22.8%) gave a positive allergy history. Five patients had a threefold or greater increase in plasma histamine while two had a decrease following injection of the contrast medium. No correlation was observed between an increase in plasma histamine concentration and either a positive allergy history or an unusual reaction to the contrast medium.
