Abstract

Virginia Apgar died in her sleep on August 7, 1974, but the example of her life, her enthusiastic spirit, her optimism, her generosity, and her fearlessness are still very much alive. She was 65 years old. In her lifetime she had at least five careers: anesthesiology, public health, genetics, aviation, and research. In addition, there were her many hobbies. And she excelled in all. She was one of the most remarkable people I have ever known. With her, life was exciting; her youthful enthusiasm and energy were boundless. She was warm and compassionate, and at the same time had a great sense of humor, sometimes earthy.
