Abstract

Sixteen patients with vulval schistosomiasis are described. Ten had vulval ‘warts’, two had vitiligo and in four it was an incidental finding. The histology of active lesions showed intense inflammation centred upon viable miracidia and degenerating forms. Eosinophils were conspicuous and granulomata were common. In two patients adult worms were seen in the lumen of veins. Although pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia was common there was no evidence of epithelial dysplasia or malignancy. Vulval schistosomiasis does not appear to be a precancerous lesion
