Abstract

A summary of the German Aerospace Research Center's results from the 6th AIAA Computational Fluid Dynamics Drag Prediction Workshop (DPW-6) held in Washington, D.C., 16-17 June 2016, is presented. The workshop has focused on an assessment of state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics methods as practical aerodynamic tools for aircraft force and moment prediction of industry-relevant configurations and has used NASA's Common Research Model civil transport aircraft configuration as the reference geometry. DLR has contributed to three out of the five workshop test cases. These include a grid convergence study and drag increment calculation on the wing-body (WB) and wing-body-nacelle-pylon (WBNP) configurations (Test Case 2), an angle-of-attack sweep using preset aero-elastic wing deflections obtained from a wind tunnel test (Test Case 3), and the coupled aero-structural simulation where wing deflections are computed through a coupling to a computational structural analysis (Test Case 5, optional).
