Magnetic properties of Sm/sub 2/Fe/sub 17/N/sub x/ and SmFe/sub 5/N/sub y/ with different nitrogen contents are studied. It was found that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy for both Sm/sub 2/Fe/sub 17/N/sub x /and SmFe/sub 5/N/sub y/ alloys changes from easy plane to easy axis at x>0.13 and y>0.07. The 1:5, 1:3, and alpha -Fe phases coexist in homogenized SmFe/sub 5/ alloy. Nitrogenation reduces the 1:3 and alpha -Fe phases, and stabilizes the 1:5 phase in SmFe/sub 5/N/sub y/ alloys. The transition in magnetocrystalline anisotropy from easy plane to easy axis for Sm/sub 2/Fe/sub 17/N/sub x/ and SmFe/sub 5/N/sub y/ alloys is gradual and dependent on nitrogen content.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
