The inelastic scattering of electrons by protons has been measured at incident electron energies up to 5 $\frac{\mathrm{BeV}}{c}$ and momentum transfers ${q}^{2}=4{(\frac{\mathrm{BeV}}{c})}^{2}$. Excitation of known nucleon resonances at $M=1238,1512,1688,\mathrm{and}\mathrm{possibly} 1920$ MeV have been observed. The calculations for the resonance at $M=1238$ MeV have been compared with calculations by Adler based on the dispersion theory of Chew, Goldberger, Low, and Nambu. The agreement is good. Qualitative models are discussed for the other resonances.
