Abstract

Abstract The chelate effect has been defined as the stability difference between a chelate complex and the corresponding complex with simple ligands. Starting from a simple picture, comprising the chelate effect as a gain in „translational entropy”︁, equations have been derived allowing to predict its magnitude. Most important are the size of the chelate ring and its strain. Complexes with tridentate, quadridentate‐ and hexadentate agents are also discussed.
