Abstract

CRYPTOCOCCOSIS, also known as torulosis and European blastomycosis, is a subacute or chronic mycotic infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans (Torula histolytica, Cryptococcus hominis). Cryptococci have been found occurring as saprophytes in every part of the world, and pathogenic strains of the organism have been recovered from the nasopharynx, skin, gastrointestinal tract and vagina of human beings, from milk, from peaches, from soil and from various animals.1 Although evidence exists that the skin and mucous membranes may be sites of primary inoculation, most authorities agree that the respiratory tract is probably the most common portal of entry of the organisms in . . .
