Abstract The nature and magnitude of the source of the natural ozone of the atmosphere is discussed and the results of calculations of the local rates of production in the periods January‐February and July‐August are given. The effect of different assumptions and models on the deduced source regions and source strengths is demonstrated. It is concluded that the most satisfactory result is obtained using solar ultraviolet intensities recently measured in the stratosphere. It is possible that there may be some catalytic destruction of ozone by water vapour, but below 35 km the effect must be small.
