Zwei fünffach koordinierte Eisenkomplexe mit ähnlichen Geometrien wie in redoxvielseitigen Enzymen wurden synthetisiert. Die fünfzähnigen N2O3-Phenylendiamin/Triphenolat-Liganden verleihen dem Komplex eine niedrige lokale Symmetrie, sodass kleine Modifikationen an der Ligandenstruktur genügen, um die Reihenfolge, in der das Metall und die Liganden oxidiert werden, komplett zu ändern (siehe Schema).
