C., and Leesburg, Va., we observed over 300 cases of an acute respiratory illness that appears to represent a newly recognized communicable disease entity. In brief, the clinical disease was characterized by fever, pharyngitis, and conjunctivitis, occurring either singly or in combination. A newly discovered virus, adenoidal-pharyngeal-conjunctival (APC) type 3, was recovered from 80 of the patients, and a specific serologic antibody response was found in practically every patient tested. Epidemiologically, cases occurred in all age groups but predominantly in children. The disease occurred in epidemic form in a summer day camp and in two residential neighborhood outbreaks, and it has occurred sporadically throughout the area. The disease was apparently infectious and spread from person to person, with an incubation period of five to nine days. The adenoidal-pharyngeal-conjunctival viruses are1e:T41b,It has been known for a number of years that organisms of the genusMycoplasmacan produce severe and often debilitating respiratorytract disease in birds, mice, rats, goats, sheep, and cattle.^1-3However, it was not until recently that aMycoplasmaorganism was implicated in respiratory-tract disease of man.⁴Recently, the Eaton agent, originally recovered in eggs in 1944, was successfully cultivated in a cell-free artificial agar medium.^5-7The organism propagated on agar medium was shown to be aMycoplasmaand was designatedMycoplasma pneumoniae.⁸Previous studies had shown that this organism was the etiologic agent of cold agglutinin-positive atypical pneumonia.^9,10In addition, the agent had been associated with other milder forms of respiratorytract disease.¹¹In part, the role ofM pneumoniaein human respiratory disease was established during a series of studies with volunteers.^12,13 After the identification of the Eaton agent as a
