Abstract

Falconer, D. S., <it>Introduction to Quantitative Genetics</it>, The Ronald Press Company, New York. 364 pp. $6.00. The author’s aim is, “to provide an introductory textbook of quantitative genetics, with emphasis on general principles rather than on practical application, and one moreover that can be understood by biologists of no more than ordinary mathematical ability.” In the opinion of the reviewer Falconer satisfies his aims more than adequately. A knowledge of elementary genetics and statistics is assumed by the author. This appears to be a wise assumption because it enables him to present a lucid coverage to readers who may be either practicing geneticists or individuals interested in gaining additional insight into the field. To do otherwise would have resulted in a voluminous book which would have satisfied neither the technically competent nor the novice. The introduction defines quantitative genetics in a broad sense and sets the tone for the remainder . . .
