Our previous results have been criticized by T. L. Hill on the ground that we considered energies of adsorption ranging from − ∞ to ∞. We have accordingly revised our former theory. It appears that, if we assume localized adsorption without interaction, the possible mathematical forms for the adsorption isotherm are very limited. We have studied in detail, for the simplest of these, the distribution function for the adsorption energy. It turns out that this simplest isotherm is a generalization of both the Freundlich and the Langmuir isotherms.
