Requirements Development, Verification, Validation, System Verification, and System Validation are important systems engineering tasks. This paper describes these tasks and then discusses famous systems where these tasks were done correctly and incorrectly. The paper illustrates how differences in developing, verifying, and validating requirements and systems can lead to failures, showing that understanding these distinctions may increase the probability of success in future designs. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
