The effects of isosorbide – a dehydric alcohol formed by the abstraction of two molecules of water from one of sorbitol – on Ménière’s disease were examined, first using a model and then clinically. (1) The endolymphatic pressure of guinea pigs with hydrops, caused by the injection of 10% silver nitrate into the endolymphatic sac, could be reduced by the administration of isosorbide. (2) In a clinical study of 102 patients with Ménière’s disease, isosorbide significantly reduced tinnitus and headache compared with the control groups.
